独創的視点
最後に残った写真は、非常にレベルの高い作品が多かった。作品を見ていて、世界中の国や民族の間で、カルチャーの違いが出ていて、本当に楽しかった。また、我々日本人の感覚ではスポーツ写真に限らず、絵などでもそこに宗教的概念の入る余地は全くないがそれは日本人だけの感覚で、外国人から見るとやはり宗教が非常にシリアスなものであるということがよく解って勉強になった。作品としては、マラソンのワンシーンは印象に残った。一人で道路の中央にあるラインの上を走るランナー、あとは全部シルエットであり、影が路上に伸びたこの状況を発見して、すかさずシャッターを切ったカメラマンの見方が素晴しいと思った。

There were a lot of photos included among the finalists that were of a very high photographic level. It was really a lot of fun looking at the photos, and seeing the differences in the cultures of the various nations and peoples around the world. The Japanese people feel that there is no room for religious ideas, not only in sports photos, but in paintings and other such works of art. But that is only how people in Japan feel. I learned that religion is something very serious to people of other countries. The photo that really left an impression on me was of a scene from a marathon race. The photographer discovered a situation in which one runner was running on a line in the center of the road, with everything else a silhouette, and with the road shaded. I think that the photographer who captured all of this on film really had a wonderful way of looking at things.
